Parents, what are your thoughts about the quality and durability of IKEA furniture?
Question by Hayden’s Mommy, Chase due Nov!: Parents, what are your thoughts about the quality and durability of IKEA furniture?
I’ve only ever bought one thing from IKEA (a shower curtain for my apartment back in college). My husband and I are looking for a couch/hide-a-bed for the kids’ playroom. What are your thoughts about the quality and durability of something like this from IKEA? I saw a few things in the new catalog that may work for what we need it for and are priced reasonably, but I also want to make sure my boys (well, soon to be 2 boys) won’t be able to destroy it. We have a lot of family that comes from out of town to visit. Your thoughts? Where do you buy your furniture? And, is it durable? Stain resistant?
Thanks!

This is a tough one. We bought kitchen cabinets for our condo a few years ago, and they were still in perfect condition two years later when we sold the condo to buy our house. We have bedroom dressers from IKEA that are in perfect condition 5 years later. We have a crib-toddler bed from IKEA that my almost 4-year old son has completely trashed (kicked off headboards and footboards, broken slats from jumping up and down), and I am just about ready to toss the matching dresser as well. We bought a sturdier crib for our second son from Sears, and it seems to be lasting better after 20 months, but it was twice the price. Our worst purchases were from big name furniture stores (Brick and Leons, not sure if you have them where you live), we bought a living room set, spent a fortune, and 18 months later, the fabric on them is toast and the frame is broken on almost every arm, on one leg, and on the underframe of the ottoman, and of course, no-one stands behind the quality of their stuff beyond 30 days.
IKEA does claim to do a lot of wear-testing on their furniture, and they do stand behind their items (some stuff is even warrantied for 10 or 20 years). You will probably get your money`s worth out of it.
