What to expect from child services home visit (long)?

May 2nd, 2011 3 comments

Question by April: What to expect from child services home visit (long)?
Okay so my boyfriend won full physical & legal custody of his children with his ex getting supervised visitation every other Saturday. They have been living with us for 2 months straight now.

We got a call from DHR this morning saying they need to do a home visit. No problem. Our home is clean, we have food so things should be fine. Does anyone know exactly what they will look for besides bed, clothes, food & safety?

The 3 year old had a twin size bed but I have the 2 year old using a twin size mattress on the floor. He is too old for a crib because he climbs out. I can’t keep him on a toddler bed or a twin bed even with rails he still manages to fall off a LOT. I moved his mattress to the floor because I am scared he is going to get hurt. Will this count against us? He is a very restless sleeper. We have watched him roll from his bed, across the floor and into the hall without ever waking up. I use a baby monitor so I will know when he is off the mattress.

Anyway, do we need safety latches on kitchen drawers, etc? I have them on some drawers but not all. Just the ones with utensils like knives & any cleaning products. Also our kitchen is very small so we don’t have enough room for a full size table. The kids use a child size folding table & chairs and we use the “bar”.

Is there anything else we need to “look out for”? This has to go well or the state gets the kids. We filed for custody because of their bio mom’s living conditions She was given a choice by the judge, her abusive boyfriend or her kids. She chose the boyfriend. So she cant get them back. (Not that we want her to at this point)

We have already arranged doctor/dentist visits to ensure nothing important is missed. (The 2 year old has asthma & allergies)

One more thing, the kids have a dresser in their room but I dont keep their clothes in it. They are bad about emptying the drawers so all of their clothes are in a dresser in our bedroom. The drawers on the dresser in their room are nailed shut to prevent the youngest from using the drawers to climb. It has a TV on top of it but everything is teethered to the wall. (These kids are very active, lol)

Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated! TIA!

(Please excuse any typos)
The judge ordered the DHR visit when we won custody. I think it is because we live in a different county than where we went to court…if that makes since.

The judge told him to consider his self lucky to have a girlfriend willing to take on all this lol.

We have 2 bedrooms. The kids-both boys-share a room. We were told that this was fine.
*sense not since

Sometimes they will personally ask the child how you are treating them and what they do on the regular basis. I think you pretty much have everything down pack just make sure your dressed presentable and make sure no dangerous objects are around or smoking, anything poisonous to the child. If you have any educational things like A, B, C. Make sure things like that are visible so they can see your teaching the child and making sure they have an education.

I Approach my Quarry!

Six days ago I was up at 3 AM, listening to Hans Zimmer while editing photos, and then I had an idea for a project with him, so I made a blog post. Now, less than a week later, I was in his studio in California!

For those of you that don’t know who Hans Zimmer is, he’s, like, the Liger of composers. He did the soundtrack for The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, and many more! In fact, back when I was in college and had a double major in Computer Science and Geophyisics (I dropped the Geophysics bit after a fight with the professor), I commandeered the SGI machine in the Geology department to make a computer animation, and I set the whole thing to one of Zimmer’s songs from Backdraft called "Burn it All". So, in short, I’ve had Hans Zimmer’s music in my head for about 20 years.

The Story of How I Got Into Hans Zimmer’s Studio

It’s because of you! We have millions of visits here on the blog every month, and you all know how thankful I am for your repeat patronage. It’s tough to get a pretty photo up every day, and I thank you for all your feedback! So, when I put out the call in my newsletter, I got a ton of responses. My math-guess was that I was one or two degrees away from Hans, especially since there are many creative-types that are regular visitors.

Also, many of you hyper-active types (like me!) talk to me, ask questions, and follow me on Twitter — thank you for being responsive to real-time requests and news.

About an hour after I sent out the newsletter at midnight, I got a response from a German gentleman (name private) who is friends with Hans! In fact, he told me he was going to see Hans the next day at his studio near Hollywood! He did a few things to help out, and, although I could not meet Hans today, I did get an amazing opportunity to take photos of his studio. I knew I could make his studio look the way it feels — I had a sublime confidence I could make it happen. Anyway, I was like a kid in a candy store. I got a ton of shots… I only had time to process four of them.

Hans Zimmer’s Studio

I don’t know if words do it justice, but I hope these photos do.

The studio is even bigger than I thought, and I was reminded of the Crimson Lounge in Chicago. In fact, I pulled up the image on my laptop there on the table to compare textures and light. I thought everything worked well together — the decadence and richness of the decorations integrated with the technology. I don’t know if there is a word for such a look… It’s something out of a Phillip Pullman novel, somewhere between Steampunk and Techno-boudoir. Again, words fail.

The first two photos I have placed on Flickr. You can click on them to go to Flickr and then zoom into the full-res size. Amazing details — especially in the chair photo. I’ll post more in coming weeks, months, and years, as usual. So, stay tuned in my this ongoing quest!

Would you prefer good handmade furniture from the US/Canada instead of mass produced kids furniture ?

Question by chicestfashion: Would you prefer good handmade furniture from the US/Canada instead of mass produced kids furniture ?
My friend and I were thinking about starting a children furniture business that makes kids storage bins…table and chairs and possibly toddler beds. (we went to college for carpentry and furniture) Would you prefer to buy something that’s high quality made here in Canada or the US even if you’d have to pay a few bucks more? Or would you prefer to buy mass produced items from overseas for a better price? Please don’t get me wrong…I’m not trashing items that are coming from overseas, but I am just wondering what people would prefer.

Given that kids grow out of their furniture so fast, I really wouldn’t pay extra money for “good” furniture. Sorry. Besides, I wouldn’t count on being able to hand it down to my kids, since their tastes will probably be completely different from mine. Also, lots of families with small kids don’t have a lot of money anyway, so I doubt people would pay for good furniture when they have to spend money on diapers.

Removing lead paint from a dresser?

September 14th, 2010 2 comments

Question by It’s-a-boy!: Removing lead paint from a dresser?
Hi,
We were just given a really old dresser that we suspect was painted with lead paint. As we’d like to use the dresser in a future kid’s room, we want to be sure to get rid of the lead paint!! What’s the best way to do this, and how much should it cost? I plan on calling some furniture refinishers tomorrow and getting some quotes, but what’s a reasonable price?

Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by John S, BaC
I hope you are kidding.

If you are serious……then this is a very dumb thing to do.
Trash it.

What can a new dresser possibly cost?
What can a used one cost?

Nah, nah….throw it away.

EDIT: Maybe I should point out here that lead in paint is not the same thing as lead in a bullet or in a fishing lure. This is not the kind of lead we normally think of. Lead in paint is a liquid, its called tetra-ethyl-lead and it does not go away, by removing the paint. Its the same thing as the lead in gasoline-which we no longer have in most western countries. It will absorb right into the skin. You can not wash it off, you can only wash it in. Thats not what you want to do. If you suspect lead in the paint-don’t take a chance. It only takes a little to make a small child sick the rest of his/her life. Just get rid of it before baby comes.
Hope I didn’t hurt your feelings. Didn’t mean to. I used to work with T.E.lead for many years- I know its danger. People who refinish furniture haven’t got a clue. Trash it.

Our 2 sons graduate next month from H.S. How long do we have to throw a party?

August 27th, 2010 4 comments

Question by paddlinglikecrazy: Our 2 sons graduate next month from H.S. How long do we have to throw a party?
We are finishing a very, very long house remodel.

What we have is goregous. A new kitchen, tile, carpet in the bedrooms, finished bedrooms – all gorgeous.

But, don’t have furniture. Two of the bathrooms aren’t finished, one has no shower door or toilet; our bathroom has no toilet, tub or shower. And, the front yard is not landscaped

There are no window treatments on any of the windows except the kids’ bedrooms, not even ours (thank God for large trees!);

Only the bedrooms and the front room have furniture and the furniture in the front room is ready for the curb.

We feel pressured. We want the party, but we feel rushed.

We want to wait, but if we do, we’ll end up with a house party and no graduation ceremony. Maybe no party!

Any ideas? Nothing with the big bucks please, we don’t live in the O.C.

Thank you.
Our hallway bath is in full working order, tub/shower/toilet/sink, it’s just the old part of the house, no remodeling done, but it can be polished up.

I’ve only been to 2 grad parties and they were both outside. So the question is can you get the landscaping done soon? It’s a good time to do outdoors with the weather so warm.

How do I remove old stickers from glass on windows and wood furniture?

August 13th, 2010 33 comments

Question by Molly R: How do I remove old stickers from glass on windows and wood furniture?
The stickers on the furniture are kids’ stickers – like Barbie stickers or something like that.

The stickers on the window are from the window manufacturer.
