Question by Ali: Sorry I am asking a lot about this, but I am at the planning spot in a re-modeling so you know how that is….
I am making a new room for my kids, all involved with imagination. I’ve been tossing around ideas all day and night in my head, and came up with this idea. To have 3 different places to change around every month or so.

#1- A cute home area with a kitchen area, dining table, baby nursery, washer, dryer, and ironing board.

#2- A downtown area with a resturant, store, vet, and doctor’s office.

#3- A fun campsite with tents, fake fire, lanterns, a boat, and a fishing pole in the “lake”.

I think I’m going to start with the 1st one because I have most things:
- play oven/stove, micorwave, cabinet, fridge, toaster, and blender
- fake food, pots, and untensils
- kids table and chairs set
- play baby cribs, changing table, and highchair
- play bottles, bibs, clothes, and diapers
- play washer, dryer, and iron
- a few old clothes

My friend heard what I wanted to do, and her kids just turned 9 and sort of out grew all her things, so I got the play washer, dryer, …..
ironing board. The rest I already have. That stuff if going to go in tonight before I change my mind. What do I need for the 2nd and 3rd plan. Again appoligize for the questions, but need a mommy to proof it, you know?

What should i do about my cold hearted landlord?

Question by Heather: What should i do about my cold hearted landlord?
I have been having sewer problems for 3 months.(raw sewage and everything.) The land lord did not do very much to fix it and for the last 2 months has done nothing and i have 3 kids at home. I decided to not pay rent this month because i can barely stay there. This Sunday he came in without an eviction or anything (which in missouri you can’t do) an removed everything i owned. Sold all my furniture and threw away my kids’ toys and clothes. and yesterday he changed the locks. I can’t afford a lawyer and the cops say it’s civil matter. What should i do? (my husband is asking for the deposit back which is only 800 and our property is much more)
The land lord did not have a court order or anything he paid someone to take the stuff out and the poilce won’t even talk to him

Taking your furniture is called THEFT. That is not a civil matter. They also cannot change the locks without eviction first.

Try free legal services that they have for poor people.

Next time you have sewer problems, file a complaint with the health department.

Take him to small claims court…it is cheap.

Parents, what are your thoughts about the quality and durability of IKEA furniture?

Question by Hayden’s Mommy, Chase due Nov!: Parents, what are your thoughts about the quality and durability of IKEA furniture?
I’ve only ever bought one thing from IKEA (a shower curtain for my apartment back in college). My husband and I are looking for a couch/hide-a-bed for the kids’ playroom. What are your thoughts about the quality and durability of something like this from IKEA? I saw a few things in the new catalog that may work for what we need it for and are priced reasonably, but I also want to make sure my boys (well, soon to be 2 boys) won’t be able to destroy it. We have a lot of family that comes from out of town to visit. Your thoughts? Where do you buy your furniture? And, is it durable? Stain resistant?

Thanks!

This is a tough one. We bought kitchen cabinets for our condo a few years ago, and they were still in perfect condition two years later when we sold the condo to buy our house. We have bedroom dressers from IKEA that are in perfect condition 5 years later. We have a crib-toddler bed from IKEA that my almost 4-year old son has completely trashed (kicked off headboards and footboards, broken slats from jumping up and down), and I am just about ready to toss the matching dresser as well. We bought a sturdier crib for our second son from Sears, and it seems to be lasting better after 20 months, but it was twice the price. Our worst purchases were from big name furniture stores (Brick and Leons, not sure if you have them where you live), we bought a living room set, spent a fortune, and 18 months later, the fabric on them is toast and the frame is broken on almost every arm, on one leg, and on the underframe of the ottoman, and of course, no-one stands behind the quality of their stuff beyond 30 days.
IKEA does claim to do a lot of wear-testing on their furniture, and they do stand behind their items (some stuff is even warrantied for 10 or 20 years). You will probably get your money`s worth out of it.
