Good paint for children’s furniture?
Question by Jared L: Good paint for children’s furniture?
I’m looking for a good paint for some unfinished furniture I’m buying for our kid’s room. Anyone have any good experience with something that’s safe, durable, low VOC, etc?

I have been happy with Behr latex paint for walls. It is remarkably lacking in odor. I am not sure what sort would be the most durable. I know that Sherwin Williams latex smells for a long time. I get migraines from smells, so odor is really important, since most ‘bad” odors and even perfumes make me sick. Home Depot has Behr and it’s sold in other places, too.

Most of the better brands are now 100%safe to use(krylon, Rustolium,Dun Edwards ,Bhear, etc.)as long as you use a high gloss,or a semi-gloss, either spray or brush. Those are extremely durable paints for a child’s furniture
Lowes carries a latex, high gloss in colors. I can’t remember the name, but it is in the aisle, where the caulking is. You may think high gloss is too shiny, but that is primarily the only paint to use for durability. Otherwise use oil base, but then you get into VOC issues.
I would choose a good latex acrylic, Moore’s Behr, Pratt & Lambert, Sico come to mind. Tremclad if you want to spray paint.
walmart latex is good, honey bees like it while it is wet.
I would suggest using a latex enamel. Because it is durable and it is a water base paint
You can go with a good quality paint in flat finish and then cover it with a clear polyurethane water based finish, which is available in a satin, medium, or gloss finish.
You can also choose a water based latex, also in your choice of finishes. Floor paint can be mixed in your choice of colors and is designed to be extremely durable.
Another finish is the Crayola brand children’s paint. I have no experience in how durable it is, but the Crayola brand does claim to be child-durable.
As long as you are painting for your child, you might consider another fun and easy project, which is to paint chalkboard surface on the back of a door, on a square on the wall, or on a piece of plywood that you attach to the wall.
Best of luck, and enjoy your project!
dutch boy has a paint for just this purpose. I have used it on some things I have made for my grandaughter and it has held up extremely well. I believe I purchased it from Menard’s and the price is very resonable..
