Question by It’s-a-boy!: Dresser lead paint removal?
Hi,
We were just given a really old dresser that we suspect was painted with lead paint. As we’d like to use the dresser in a future kid’s room, we want to be sure to get rid of the lead paint!! What’s the best way to do this, and how much should it cost? I plan on calling some furniture refinishers tomorrow and getting some quotes, but what’s a reasonable price?
Thanks!!

they make liquid paint remover that will work and keep you from sanding it off and making dust . most paint and hardware stores carry one brand or another you just spray or brush it on and scrap it off .some are more pleasant than others , as far as what is reasonable in refinishing I never dealt with a finisher and don’t know how much they would charge.

Question by ▪Kate▪: Any Advice???
Okay, so in about a month, we will be moving to a home about seven hours away. Now, here is the tricky part. On top of all that, I have six kids to tend to, I am pregnant, and I have barely any help besides my husband. Ahhh!!! I am totally stressing. I am going to be painting every room, except the kitchen and dining room. (And I will hire someone to help) I am planning on decorating every single one of my kids’ rooms, plus another nursery for the new twins. I am just scared we will not be done in time before I get too big. I am only 11 weeks, and I look like I am about 25 weeks, already. Who knows how big I will be by the time we start moving in. Does anyone have an advice to offer? Or any support. Even though it is a month away, I am already stressing. We live in a big house as is, and the new house is almost 3 times bigger. We are going to be buying new furniture, aswell. Plus, we have three huge dogs. Please, I need advice. I have already started gathering boxes, and spent almost
the whole day cleaning and packing. Thank you for your help.
~Kate, a stressed pregnant Mama!
And i’m will not be refraining from any of the things I listed. Those are priorites for me. Thanks.
My kids are 3, 4, 6, 8, and 6 month old twins.
My husband is a doctor, and he works 6-7 days a week.
Moving from San Marino, CA, to Napa, CA.

Do a little as you can and quit freaking out. As for the painting, you don’t have to get it all done in 5 seconds. Paint the baby’s room first and you can slowly work your way through the house after that. If the walls stay the old color for 6 months it won’t hurt anyone. Get the 6 kids to help with moving and unpacking. At the very least they can help set up their new rooms or take things to put in different parts of the house as you unload from boxes. Have your husband take off a few days to pack and unpack so you don’t try to do it all yourself. With the dogs, kennel them in their crates or throw them into the back yard. Moving (even preggy with kids) only has to be as stressful as you allow it to be. I’d say unpack first, paint second. It won’t be long before the bending and lifting will exhaust you, but painting and hanging things on walls wouldn’t be quite as tiring.

Question by Adelyn B: Question for Stay at Home moms…how much do you do?
i just asked a question a few minutes ago and got blasted because my live-in boyfriend is being charged with child support from the state….well he is paying child support because he decided to keep the kids’s MEDICAID from the state instead of getting insurance for them and he KNEW that they would ask him for support since the state is providing the MEDICAID…. so why does that make me a bad person since im a stay at home mom with a pre-schooler and a one year old…i work part time to pay for the gas i use to get to school 3 nights out the week so i work and go to school also and raise the children…i help out with some of the bills (water, phone, food) and am with the children 80% of my time. the boyfriend feels that since he pays out rent ($ 400) and the electricity(150) and cable (150) that he should be in control of all money and will not give me any for things that I or the children want or need. at any given time he has money in both savings and checking accounts..so am i a bad person for the child support thing even though he knew they were coming for him? also shouldnt i expect him to help me out with money and things because we decided that i would stay home and he knows i dont have any money? do you get money or gifts from your partner? are you able to buy the things you need? i am not greedy i just know that he could afford what i ask for he just doesnt want to give it to me…he only pays the bills he doesnt buy food, didnt provide any of the furniture it was all mine, doesnt buy the kids clothing etc that comes out of my pocket…what to do?

You are not a bad person for asking for child support, in raising a child there are 2 parents and both have responsibility for that child. As for your boyfriend is he that father of your 2 kids? If not that is why he may feel he is not responsible but if he is or isn’t it doesnt matter he can’t expect to have a relationship and 2 kids and for all of it to be free. You do what you can and it’s wrong for him to want to withold money from you in any case he knew what he was getting himself into. If this continues then you may seriously want to think about what kind of person you are with, he shouldn’t try and make you feel like if you do less and therefore deserve less…if ya’ll are in a realtionship then regardless of who earns the money it belongs to the both of ya’ll…that’s what relationships are, it’s not just everyone for themselves if he wanted that then he should have just looked for a girlfriend that he didn’t live with…I hope this helps and good luck.

Question by Courtney W: What color paints should I use in my new house?
We just purchased our first home and I need help with colors. The living room furniture is a mocha brown color and we use a khaki for that room but it’s the dining room, kid’s room, master bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom I need help with, so almost the whole house. I want to do an orange for the kitchen, a red or dark blue for the dining room which has wood floors and wainscotting halfway up which I would do white, I think. For the bedroom I found a comforter set with tans, browns and aqua blue so I wanted to do a khaki color there too, which is off the kitchen so it will flow. The bathroom I would do white so I can change the shower curtain etc, when I get bored with it. But what about the kids room, my stepson is 10, and he’s not sure either. I guess I just need suggestions on all the rooms and thoughts on my ideas so far.

I have a red dining room and absolutely love it, just remember to use a dark primer, or you will be painting for days. I did my trim in black. It kind of looks like an italian cafe. I don’t think I would use a bright orange for the kitchen , but terra cotta would be cool. Do the kitchen and dining room touch? Are they going to clash? Check out some decorating websites with your step son. Congrats on the first home. Remember , that paint is just that ,and can be changed in a few hours. Go bold.

Question by Stimpson J. Cat: My Cleaning Lady Moves Stuff!?
I know, I shouldn’t complain cuz I have a cleaning lady. It drives me nuts because she does an awesome job except she moves my stuff, like she totally re-arranges the kids’ bedrooms or the living room. She also moves my small stuff (clutter) and then I can’t find things. I already tried saying, yeah, I kinda always like things in the same place but she didn’t get the hint.
I can see where my clutter (small items, papers, etc) gets in the way of her cleaning but I don’t see the need to move my furniture. I let her re-arrange my daughter’s room since it wasn’t a big deal but I had to un-do her arrangement of my son’s room because she put his bed against the wall that shares with the bathroom wall, so the potty flushing would be in his ear when he sleeps. So I tried to let her have her way one time.
The thing is I don’t wanna make her mad and lose her because she watches my kids, she’s fantastic with the kids and they love her. I really like her and she’s a great dependable person.

Question by Trudi B: Our older cat’s behavior radically changed after the birth of our twins. What should we do?
Three years ago, we had twins. Since then, one of our cats has completely lost it (we’ve caught her on video so we know which one it is). Frequent urination all over the house, refusal to poop in the litter box (she’ll do it right outside or sometimes in another part of the house altogether), etc. If she can get into the kids’ room or anywhere near one of their blankets, she will make an extra effort to empty a full bladder. We keep our bed covered in plastic and can’t leave any cloth items on the floor anywhere in the house (including bath mats). This cat has peed on expensive furniture, including a glider and a sofa. We’ve tried behavior modification, but with two toddlers in the house our ability to deal with this problem is limited. This cat was a beloved, constant companion for 13 years, but she is now 16 and has been trouble for the last three years. Should we put her to sleep or let her live out her years? No one would adopt her — she is old, arthritic and pees everywhere!

Question by Boo R: Deadbeat Dad question. How can I report my girlfriends ex for being a deadbeat?
My girlfriend’s ex husband is a deadbeat dad with over 5 years of unpaid child support. He hasn’t had a job in years & refuses to get one, citing every excuse in the book. He is still allowed to see the kids & they are very close to him. Because of this, my girlfriend is afraid to report him because she is afraid he will make a stink about it & try and turn the kids against her. She is VERY non-confrontational & hasn’t pressed the issue, as she doesn’t want to have to deal with his bulls&%$ t, but she has recently been laid off from her job & her finances are getting very tight. He, on the other hand, has just inherited a large sum of money from his mother, and is using it to buy new furniture, a new car, and whatever else he wants…flaunting it all in front of her constantly. When she asked if he would put some of this windfall money aside for the kids’ college fund, he replied “oh, they’re both smart…they’ll get full scholarships”. Grrrrr…
I know it should be her responsibility, but I fear she simply doesn’t have the guts to ever confront him about it. What can I do to report him to the proper agencies? Will they accept a report from anyone other than the mother? It’s not like we don’t know where he is…he just won’t pay & has zero sense of responsibility for his children. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer by NeighborLady
She needs to report him. Call Child Support every single monday and tell them she hasn’t received any support this week. Every Monday!
She needs to stop using her psychic powers to discern what he will do, think, feel, say, and use that telephone. Her children are more important than her ex’s feelings.
The agency will do all the work. She doesn’t have to be confrontational. Then lie if he brings it up – she had nothing to do with it. The agency is doing this all on its own.

Question by Morgan: Am I obligated to help my sister?
My sister just turned 28. She decided to have a baby using a sperm donor. Before she became pregnant, I tried to explain to her how hard it would be for her, especially as a single mom. Now that she’s had the baby (her daughter is 6 months old and absolutely adorable) she finally understands just how difficult it is. She’s been struggling with money and the responsibility and has asked us for help. A lot of help. She has asked us for our kids clothes. I had no problem with that, they’ve outgrown them and we won’t be having any more. She has asked us for our baby furniture. Our youngest three aren’t even a year old yet. I told her I could give her some of it, but we’re still using a lot of it. She doesn’t seem to understand that even though we have three car seats/cribs/highchairs and several strollers, three of our kids still need that stuff and our family is very big so we need a lot of it. I have parted with some of the stuff they have outgrown. She has repeatedly asked for a ride to/from places. She asks us for money all the time. Not a little money, we’re talking thousands of dollars. She often drops by to “visit” with no warning. Most of the time, these visits end with her realizing she has to go to work and ‘gee, could watch the baby for me?’ I am getting tired of it. I have eight kids to take care of. I tried to point this out and her response was, “It’s just one more kid.”
It’s not ‘just one more kid’ though. She never brings anything her daughter will need (diapers, etc.) because she knows I’ve got some. She constantly talks about how no one understands how hard it is to be a single mom. I have a hard time allowing her to throw a pity party. She did it to herself. She chose to be a single mom. I am getting tired of this. I know she’s my sister and I love her, but how do I put an end to this? I’ve tried talking to her but it just doesn’t work. My husband thinks we’re obligated to help her because she’s my sister and she’s a single mom.
I need some help. How do I get my sister to stop taking advantage of me?

Answer by John S, BaC
I hope you are kidding.
If you are serious……then this is a very dumb thing to do.
Trash it.
What can a new dresser possibly cost?
What can a used one cost?
Nah, nah….throw it away.
EDIT: Maybe I should point out here that lead in paint is not the same thing as lead in a bullet or in a fishing lure. This is not the kind of lead we normally think of. Lead in paint is a liquid, its called tetra-ethyl-lead and it does not go away, by removing the paint. Its the same thing as the lead in gasoline-which we no longer have in most western countries. It will absorb right into the skin. You can not wash it off, you can only wash it in. Thats not what you want to do. If you suspect lead in the paint-don’t take a chance. It only takes a little to make a small child sick the rest of his/her life. Just get rid of it before baby comes.
Hope I didn’t hurt your feelings. Didn’t mean to. I used to work with T.E.lead for many years- I know its danger. People who refinish furniture haven’t got a clue. Trash it.
